“GRACE KELLY IN THE CINEMA”
A Tribute presented by the East Falls Historical Society
2019 will mark the 90th Anniversary of the birth of Grace Kelly of East Falls.
To celebrate what Grace meant to East Falls and eventually to the world, the East Falls Historical Society will present a tribute to her memory in her chosen profession on Wednesday, October 9, at the Falls of Schuylkill Library,Midvale Avenue and Warden Drive at 6:30 pm. The program is free and open to the public.
Grace Kelly’s career in acting began in East Falls at the Old Academy Playhouse. At the age of 12, Grace stepped on stage for the first time replacing her sister, Peggy, who came down with Chicken Pox on opening night. Six appearances in other plays followed including a production by her uncle, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, George Kelly. She left for New York as a teenager and we all know the rest.
Or do we? Albert Crescenzo, historian with the Ocean City Historical Society, has made a study of the career of Grace Kelly, actress, of stage, TV and screen. Mr. Crescenzo will provide little known details of her performances. How much does he know about her television appearances? Quite a bit actually.
The program will be enhanced by film snippets of her popular movies. Details will explain how she got the parts in each of her movies and what each meant to her career. The movies progressed from seconds on screen to star billing and leading lady status accommodating her meteoric rise to stardom. Her career culminated in and Academy Award in 1954 for the only part that did not capitalize on her beauty and style.
